This recipe is from my friend Stephanie.  She makes the most delicious holiday cookies and she always includes these yummy brownies. I made ONE change to the recipe, which I’ll note below.

TURTLE BROWNIES (aka Lava Brownies — see below)

1 box chocolate cake mix (original recipe uses German chocolate cake mix)
1 (14 oz.) pkg. caramels
2/3 c. evaporated milk
3/4 c. melted butter
1 c. nuts
12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate pieces

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
** Line 9X13 pan with parchment paper. When the brownies are cooled, you can lift them out of the pan and cut them easier**
Combine caramels and 1/3 cup evaporated milk in microwave safe bowl.  Cook 1 minute at a time until melted (roughly 3 mins on high)
Melt butter.

Blend until mixture holds together.
Stir in nuts.

Press 1/2 of cake mixture in a greased 13 x 9 inch pan and bake for 6 minutes at 350 degrees.

Remove from oven.

Sprinkle chocolate chips on the brownie base.
Pour melted caramels evenly on top.

Crumble remaining mix over caramels.

Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. (You may need extra time)

(this is where Lava brownies comes in, because that’s what this stage reminds me of. What do you think?  Do Lava Brownies sound appetizing?)
Cool slightly and cut into squares.

Enjoy!  Do not be tempted to cut these into giant pieces. Small ones really are enough.

Yes, I did just say a small brownie is enough.

Really, I did.
